Writing a Job Ad That Attracts the Right People

Most job adverts are written to be defensible rather than to be read. They list requirements nobody checks and describe a culture that could belong to any employer.

The cost is not that nobody applies. It is that the wrong people apply, and sorting them takes longer than writing a better advert would have.

Write for the person you want

Say what the first three months look like. Name the salary. Say where the work happens and how often. Cut any requirement you would not actually reject someone over, because every one you leave in filters out candidates who could do the job and keeps the ones who ignore instructions.

“We cut our requirements list from fourteen bullets to five and the shortlist got better immediately.”

Aurelie Bertrand

Then read it as a candidate would. If you cannot tell what the job involves from the advert alone, neither can anyone else.
